2007 – 2008 Angela Wong

My rotary year as president started with my installation ceremony held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on 6 July, 2007. I was very glad that I had the full support from my fellow Rotarians, family and friends evidenced by the fact that I had 2 full tables of guests to

witness my presidential commencement led by DG Peter Wong.

During my tenure, our club gained 2 new members, Ramesh Sippy who was transferred from Rotary Club of Wanchai and Dr. Amos Lo who is an ENT specialist.

We achieved a lot in our service projects, including vision screening in Guangxi led by Rotarian Pauline, PP Maureen, Rotarian Colman Chan and delegates from Polytechnic University of Hong Kong. We improved school facilities at Mashan through cooperation with Handicap International, improving home environments of people affected by leprosy at Guangxi. With the generous support from PP Bill, we attended the HK Cancer Fund annual fund raising walkathon, Stride for a Cure, with a big group of attendees from our club, Rotaract Club of PolyU and Interact Club of Tang Shui Kin Secondary School.

It had been a wonderful experience for us to do a joint project with our sister club in Singapore, Rotary Club of Jurong Town, under the help of Christian Action in Hong Kong, to build a school for the poor orphans in Qinghai.

We also funded Operation Smile $8,000 for an operation of a child with cleft palate.

I did a few travels in the name of Rotary during my year. In April, 2008, I was very privileged to have PP Maureen and her husband Jorn, my friends – Mary, Jeannie and Sulia, going to India to join me for the Regional Immunization Day in polio eradication. We were stunned by the poor living conditions but very impressed by the enthusiasm of the kids in receiving immunization.

I went to attend the installation dinner of another sister club in Philippines, Rotary Club of Mandaloyung and they were very welcoming and eager to have joint project with our club, such as the feeding program for the needy children.

On 15 to 18th June, I flew to Los Angeles to attend RI Convention which was one of the best I had ever experienced.

Having good fun in our fellowship meetings is one of the important factors in maintaining our membership. PP Gilbert was very helpful in organizing bowling event in Hong Kong Club and Christmas party at Top Deck. PE David Wright, together with PP Maureen, held a wonderful wine tasting dinner at his home in Clear Water Bay. Besides, we had a very successful fund-raising and entertaining ball “Gangsters and their Molls” held at HK Football Club in May, 2008.

I think I had a very fruitful term and I shall always treasure all the friendships and rotary knowledge I gained during my presidential year.
